Loop around Ireland

Here's the itinerary for my all-around-Ireland flying adventure, leaving from Oban, Scotland, for Derry, then a counter-clockwise loop around the island, stopping at the major airports along the way.

EGEO - Oban, Argyll and Bute, Scotland
EGAE - Eglinton, Londonderry, Derry, Ireland
EIDL - Donegal
EIKN - Knock, Connacht
EINN - Shannon
EIKY - Kerry
EICK - Cork
EIWF - Waterford
EIDW - Dublin
EGNS - Side trip to Isle of Man!
EGAA - Aldergrove, Belfast, Antrim
EGAE - Eglinton, Londonderry, Derry

6/19 My first leg is from Oban to Derry, a distance of 104 NM, and gets me to the northern coast of Ireland. I guess there is some controversy about the name of the town, which some people call Londonderry. Here are some things to do in Derry.

6/23 Next leg is from Derry to Donegal, a short distance of 41 NM, which leaves very little time to climb to a higher cruise altitude, and descend, so I'm planning a low 6,000 foot cruise altitude. Here are some things to do in Donegal.

6/29 Flying from Donegal to Connacht, almost twice as far as the last leg, but still another relatively short distance of 70 NM. Covering that longer distance should leave me enough time to get up to a cruise altitude of 14,000 feet for a little while, before heading back down for the approach to Knock airport. In real life, Knock is closed for the moment, due to firefighting activity, but in the simulator, I get to fly in anyway, without causing any trouble. Here are some things to do in Connacht

7/13 Flying from Connacht to Shannon, a trip of 63 NM. Here are some things to do in Shannon

7/15 Flying from Shannon to Kerry, another short hop of 38 NM.

7/16 Flying from Kerry to Cork, a trip of 43 NM.

7/21 Flying from Cork to Waterford, home of Waterford Crystal. This is a 55 NM flight. Here are some things to do in Waterford

7/22 Flying from Waterford to Dublin. I got started in the morning, but had to pause the flight for a few days, and ended up finishing it at night. I had my brother in law visiting, and went to show him how cool my little personal jet was, but it was hard to see anything in the dark, haha. Then when we arrived at Dublin, it was so late, they had closed the airport, and turned off all the runway lights. Boo! I tried again a little earlier the next night, and had no problem finding the runway that time.

8/10 Side trip flight from Dublin to Isle of Man!

8/11 Flying from Isle of Man to Aldergrove airport in Belfast.

8/12 Flying from Belfast to LondonDerry, and the end of this two-month adventure! This pic is looking westward toward the airport, with the runway just barely hiding behind the top edge of the layer of clouds below me.

Loop around Scotland

"And now, for my next trick..." I flight-planned a counter-clockwise loop around Scotland, a trip totaling 869 nautical miles (NM), starting and ending at Oban, with stops at 14 other airports. Most of the flight legs were so short, that it didn't make sense to get above 10,000 feet, so I got to enjoy the scenery, and the usual low level puffy clouds, for most of the route.

I've included a snapshot from each leg of the trip, and plan to add more comments, when I come back to this...

The itinerary for this adventure, which took me a leisurely two weeks, looks like this:

EGEO - Oban, Argyll and Bute
EGPU - Tiree, Argyll and Bute
EGPI - Islay, Argyll and Bute

Visiting Melfort Pier

My friend Etonella has talked about her summer place at Melfort Pier in Scotland, not far from Oban. These pics are from a late afternoon flight from Oban to Melfort Pier, in the Cessna Caravan 208, followed by a few pics in the daylight, while flying around Melfort in a nice slow little taildragger.

Taking off in the Caravan, from runway 19 at Oban airport (EGEO), with Ardmucknish Bay to my right
Climbing away from Oban runway 19, turning right toward Ardmucknish Bay
Crossing the mouth of Loch Etive, heading toward Dunstaffnage Castle
Passing over a small island just off the coast from Dunstaffnage Castle
Over Ganavan Bay, just offshore from the beach at Ganavan - the lights to the left are at the beach parking lot
The lights of Oban ahead and left, just past Battleship Hill
The city of Oban to the left
Heading overland, following Soroba Road A816 from Oban to Melfort
Loch Melfort ahead and right
Loch Melfort to the right
Melfort Pier near the center of the picture
Circling over Loch Melfort
Over Kilmelford and Soroba Road, with Melfort Pier to my right
Over Tullich, looking toward Fearnach Bay and Melfort Pier
I switched to a little slow taildragger and daytime, for a more leisurely flight, and better view of the Melfort area
Looking straight down Melfort Pier from over the Loch
Looking out toward Loch Melfort from over Melfort Village
Making a slow approach to an open field near the pier

Visiting Denali (Mt. McKinley)

One of my reasons for flying to Talkeetna was to wait for a good weather day, and go visit Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley. I've been to Denali National Park once, but only got to enjoy a one day bus tour of the park, with the mountain off in the distance, shrouded in clouds. I've always wanted to see it up close. This morning turned out to be perfect conditions for the flight!

I woke up bright and early in Talkeetna, and got the plane started and moving before sunrise.
Nice large airport name painted on the ramp.
Taxiing out in the morning mist.

Ready for takeoff on runway 01.
Taking off to the north, with the big Susitna River behind me. I've read that the Susitna is the 15th largest river in the USA. Denali is ahead of me and to the left, on a northwest heading.
Heading northwest toward Denali. I was so excited about finally getting to see Denali from the air, that I captured a lot of snapshots. I'll let them speak for themselves most of the time, and throw in a comment here and there.

Denali is lighting up, as the rosy morning sunlight hits it.
Sun rising off my right wing.

With Denali ahead and left, I've chosen an altitude of 17,000 feet for my flight counter-clockwise around Denali. That leaves me about 6,000 feet below the top of the mountain, which should provide a great viewing angle, if I can get close enough. With clear skies, my main concern about getting close, is clear air turbulence near the mountain, so I'll be on the lookout for it.
This might be the Ruth glacier, which I've read occupies the southeast side of Denali.

Great view of this magnificent mountain, reflecting the light of the sunrise, from my nice warm vantage point inside the cockpit.
Starting my first left turn, to circumnavigate the mountain counter-clockwise. There will be a lot of left turns in the next few minutes.

Denali with the moon behind it. With this current viewpoint from below the aircraft, it looks like I'm above the mountain, but that's just a false perspective.
Here's another perspective, that more accurately shows my altitude relative to the mountain.

I think this is the Peters glacier, which I've read occupies the north and northwest portion of the mountain.
The rising sun peeking up above Denali and North Peak.

I think this is the Kahiltna glacier, which I read occupies the southwest side of Denali.

Heading away from Denali, back towards Talkeetna.

The early morning rising sun is now off my left wing, as I head back southeast.
Talkeetna is straight ahead, at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna rivers.
Talkeetna airport is just past the Talkeetna river that flows across my path ahead.
This is a good angle on the confluence of the Susitna and Talkeetna rivers ahead, with the airport just beyond the Talkeetna river.
On left downwind for runway 01 at Talkeetna airport, with the sun just above the horizon.
Turning from base leg toward runway 01 at Talkeetna airport.
Turning onto final approach to runway 01 at Talkeetna airport, which is hard to see in the haze, on the far side of the river, at the upper left of this snapshot.
On final approach to runway 01 at Talkeetna airport.

Exterior view of the Vision jet on final approach to Talkeeta runway 01, visible in the upper right of this snapshot.
Approaching the runway 01 threshold at Talkeetna airport.
Landing at Talkeetna airport, with the rising sun just above the horizon.
Stopped on the runway, with my map terrain warning display telling me with all the red, that there's a lot of ground around me, that is within 100 feet of my wheels. Perfectly reasonable!

On the ground at Talkeetna airport, with the airport buildings glowing in light of the morning sunrise.
I decided to park next to a sweet little L-5, right near the big Talkeetna letters painted on the tarmac.
All shutdown and ready for another night in Talkeetna.
